Monday Evening Concert | Archipelagos

In January 2013 we make our Monday Evening Concert debut with the crazy-delicate string sounds by Xenakis, and the bright clamor of Messiaen’s mini-concerto for piano, winds, and percussion, with windows into the astonishing world of music in the Philippines. Being on the edges of continents, not Asian, not American, may have helped José Maceda and Jonas Baes find their own routes. Unorthodox instruments and combinations uncover the strange familiarity of nature, and the familiar strangeness.  As happens, too, in Messiaen’s birdsong transformations and the music of English nomad Frank Denyer, whose work was a revelation of the 2009-10 MEC season.
