ELLEN REID
composer
ELLEN REID is a composer and sound artist whose work “brims with canny invention” (LA Weekly). She creates visceral experiences where sound and story collide. Reid’s work is largely collaborative and takes the form of opera, scores for dance, film, theater, and immersive interactive media. Reid’s new opera Winter’s Child was recently performed at The Industry’s FIRST TAKE at the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) which was hailed as “full of imagination, full of promise” by the LA Times, and her music direction and vocal scoring for Prometheus Bound at the Getty Villa was said it would “make you believe that the mythical sirens really existed” (KCRW). Reid’s compositions, installations and scores have been heard internationally at the United Nations in Thailand, Galapagos Art Space (NYC), the Ruhrtrinalle (PACT Zollverein, Germany), 104 (Paris), cˇu’m„a* (Istanbul), and with Theater Mitu in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Reid holds a BFA from Columbia University and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts.
When She is not composing, Ellen’s favorite indulgences are taking long walks, drinking warm beverages, having a dance parties and going to the Korean Spa. If she could have any pet, it would probably be an iguana. Her music sounds a lot angrier than she is (most of the time).
MODERN ODYSSEUS
Sunday February 16, shows at 4pm and 630pm
Modern Odysseus is a visceral concert experience; an exploration of sound and story through interactive installation, video design and new music. This February at Art Share LA, as part of wild Up’s WORK series, Ellen Reid’s Modern Odysseus will be performed by the wild Up ensemble and tenor Timur Bekbosunov, and will feature the work of writer Mandy Kahn and filmmaker Davyde Wachell. In their journey, the audience will be submerged into soundscapes, intimate chamber music, and all-encompassing larger compositions. The music, as a narrative force, and its designed environment will evoke a deep experiential sense of the passage of time, desire, celebration, longing, loss, disorientation and homecoming as the audience navigates Art Share LA’s tangled galleries.
This collaboration will feature new music by Ellen Reid, arrangements of and homages to some of the music she loves as well as the compositions, improvisations and sensibilities of the members of wild Up involved – Christopher Rountree, Matt Cook, Derek Stein, Richard Valitutto and Brian Walsh.
