Experimental dance group NICK+JAMES join forces with sound art duo CURRENT (Archie Carey and Odeya Nini) to create a visual and sonic journey. Multiple pieces will be interwoven into a single hour long performance as the choreography and composition blend as one.
CURRENT
A performance/sound art duo combining the music and minds of Archie Carey and Odeya Nini. CURRENT uses analog electronics, processed bassoon + voice, field recordings, gizmos, gadgets and many other electro/acoustic tools to create new sonic worlds through improvisation. Odeya and Archie have had the opportunity to perform live scores for dance and film at the Portland Art Museum, REDCAT, Highways Performances Space, and many others, collaborating with artists including Maureen Selwood, NICK+JAMES, Prumsodun OK, and Alison O’Daniel.
Archie Carey
Archie Carey is a bassoonist, a composer, and a sound artist living in Los Angeles. He has had the great opportunity to travel the world playing everything from Mozart to a metal plate with a contact microphone through distortion pedals. As a bassoonist Archie finds great enjoyment in mastering the music of the past, as well as creating the music of the future.
Odeya Nini
Odeya Nini is a Los Angeles based vocalist, composer and performance artist. At the locus of her interests are textural harmony, gesture, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrete. Utilizing various mediums of expression, space, atmosphere, acoustics, tone, performance and syntax are reconsidered to allow novel ways for sonic experiential reverberations.
Odeya received a BA in vocal performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts, she has studied with artists such as Theo Bleckmann and Meredith Monk. As both vocalist and composer she has collaborated extensively with dancers, animators, film makers and in theater, presenting her work both in the US and abroad.
Based in Los Angeles, Nick Duran and Jmy James Kidd have joined forces to create original dance works under the title NICK+JAMES. They work out of Pieter—the Lincoln Heights studio where they rehearse, teach dance classes, curate performances, and make clothing—and are recipients of a 2012 ARC grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation. This year’s performances include premiers at Pieter, Highways Performance Space, Perform Chinatown, and in This is What I Want, part of the National Queer Arts Festival at SOMArts in San Francisco. NICK+JAMES is currently in development of a new dance titled Tender Heart, working in response to Tara Jane ONeil, Wagner, Kendrick Lamar, Dusty Springfield and Lesley Gore.
Nick Duran is a California native and one-half of NICK+JAMES. In NYC he danced with Brian Brooks, Seán Curran, Neil Greenberg, Fiona Marcotty, Mark Morris, Dušan Týnek, and Johannes Wieland, and his choreography was presented by Dance Theatre Workshop, DanceNow/NYC, and Movement Research at the Judson Church. Duran holds a MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is a lecturer at California State University, Long Beach, UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance, Loyola Marymount University and a frequent guest artist at The Wooden Floor and Pomona College.
